Final vote tonight for possible change in bell times

A proposal to revamp school hours in Waterloo Region is up for a final vote tonight at the Waterloo Region District School Board.
Changes to so-called bell times are aimed, in part, at making the board’s busing system more efficient, in turn saving an estimated one million dollars a year.
The proposal has met with opposition from some parents who are concerned earlier start times, in some cases, will mean less sleep for younger children, while later start times for high school students will cut into their after-school jobs and extracurricular activities.
Abigail Dancey, Manager of Communications for the public school board, tells 570 News as it stands now, bell times are all over the board and this proposal would improve the overall structure.
The local Catholic school board will not vote on the proposal for a few weeks since it has extended the public consultation process through February 15th.
Dancey says if both boards don’t vote in favour of the changes it would be very difficult for just one of the boards to implement.
