Future of Boathouse up for discussion

Once again the Boathouse will be a topic of discussion tonight at Kitchener’s City Council meeting.

Council will discuss two things tonight regarding the Boathouse. First on the agenda, is the exterior renovations of the  Boathouse, while second on the agenda is the interior renovations. After that a recommendation on cost will be made. Ward 9 councillor Frank Etherington tells 570 news the factors that will contribute to the decision of the interior and exterior design.

“One is to maintain the integrity of that unique music scene of the Boathouse, and the second one is, for me personally, is to attempt with these renovations to create a wider more inclusive use of the Boathouse.”

Etherington says he would like to see the Boathouse continue to be a live music venue, but at the same time he’d like for it to become more inviting for families during the day.

The cost to the renovations will be in excess of half a million dollars.

“I believe the total cost, no matter which way it goes, would be in excess of $500, 000 dollars, which is a lot of money.”

Etherington ensure the public that the Boathouse will continue as a live music venue.

“Certainly it will continue as a music venue, we’re just trying to upgrade the facility the building and the patio at the rear. As far as I’m concerned he (Kevin Doyle) will still be the tenant and the city still a landlord.”

Etherington says council will make a recommendation on cost tonight, and while the final vote is expected to take place on February 6th.
