Cambridge begins budget talks

Cambridge residents will likely have to fork over more to cover this year’s city property tax bill.
The city got the ball rolling on deliberations unveiling its draft 2012 budget yesterday afternoon.
As it stands now, the city is looking at a 5% increase, or roughly $56 more for the average homeowner.
However, city council will be spending the coming weeks looking for ways to lower that number.
Chair of the Budget Task Force, Gary Price stresses “This is not the final percentage of tax increase, rather a starting point in which to evaluate service priorities and proposed enhancements, along with how they impact the overall financial position.”
Budget approval is expected on March 5th, but prior to that, the city has scheduled what it is calling delegation night, Monday January 16th, to allow residents to provide their feedback.
That’s taking place in the city council chambers starting at 7 p.m.
