More with less

Waterloo Regional Police will be looking to do more with less, as their board has approved forwarding a sleeker 2012 budget request to Regional Council.

A request for a levy increase of 1.3% will be presented next week, just short of $126 million.

That’s after Regional Police asked for over $127 million last month, an increase of 1.64%
and today requested 1.32%.

Chief Matt Torigian tells 570 news he’s very pleased with the direction the board has asked the service to move into, “we’re confident that we can meet the boards objectives and at the same time meet the hiring objectives for 2012 and what’s most important is that we are continuing the pace that we’re on to make sure that we meet the community expectations.”

The chief says it’s too early to tell where the funds will come from, but it will be examined,  “it will be tough, believe it or not, even at $126 million, to find a couple hundred thousand dollars is difficult, but that’s what we’ll do to ensure that we can hire the necessary staff.”

Police Board Chair and Regional Councillor Tom Galloway says while it’s not as much as what the Chief was hoping for, the funds will address some of their needs. Galloway believes council will “reluctantly,” approve this budget request.
