GO Transit riders will face a fare hike as of February 18th.
The hike will range between 30 and 40 cents on one-ride fares using a “fare by distance” approach, meaning riders who travel farther will pay more.
Metrolinx, the provincial transportation agency that runs GO Transit, voted unanimously on Monday afternoon to go ahead with the hike.
Metrolinx said it has experienced unprecedented ridership growth, but that alone won’t be enough to manage increases in costs and the costs of new initiatives.
It’s expected the hike will generate almost $20 million a year.
GO last raised fares in March 2010.
GO train service from Kitchener to Toronto just started in December.
