56 years ago and definitely by accident was how NORAD began tracking Santa.
There had been an add in a newspaper giving kids a number to call in and talk to Santa.
However there was a typo and the number for the NORAD command centre had been given instead.
Colonel Harry Shoup answered the phone but didn’t turn away the little girl that had called.
Lieutenant Commander Bill Lewis of the NORAD headquarters in Colorado said that Shoup continued to tell the little girl.. where Santa was. And to this day they track him 365 days of the year by using their radars and make sure he can travel safely across the globe.
Lieutenant Lewis added that if you want to track Santa on Christmas Eve you can visit www.noradsanta.org where you can find links to google earth and you can watch Santa in the sky.
