Sentence in Iron Horse Trail killing

A judge has sentenced an 18-year-old man to ten years in prison in the death of 60-year-old John Ferreira of Kitchener.

Ferreira died after being attacked while walking with his son along the Iron Horse Trail in Kitchener on New Year’s Eve of 2010.

Ryan Bates plead guilty last month to manslaughter and aggravated assault and was sentenced today.

Joe Wamback, CEO Canadian Victims Foundation spoke on 570’s Jeff Allan Show today about the case.

“It’s a shame, I feel very very deeply for the family.” said Wamback.

He adds because Bates plead guilty, he’s eligible for a pardon.

The other teen involved, now 17, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault because there wasn’t proof he knew Bates was using a knife.
