No open burning in Waterloo

Waterloo City Council has dumped the idea of allowing open air burning within the City of Waterloo.
Residents of Kitchener, meanwhile, are allowed to have fire pits in their backyards and some have called the By-Law in Waterloo a little “draconian.”
The Director of By-Law Enforcement for the City of Waterloo, Jim Barry tells 570News that the By-Law is something that most residents of Waterloo agree with.
“It’s essentially been supported by the community, we get complaints throughout the year and we deal with those complaints and we think we have a good system in place. The By-Law that we’ve enacted allows us to continue forward with that good system.”
Barry says that the By-Law has come about because of three notions.
“The three basic principles we looked at when creating the new By-Law were providing clear and consist message to the public, promoting health and safety through fire prevention and protection of property and reducing unnecessary nuisance from smoke.”
Barry says that the fire pits that are attached to a propane tank are legal in Waterloo. The fine for open air burning in the City of Waterloo is $450 dollars.
