UW hits an impressive milestone

A milestone at the University of Waterloo will be marked today.
What’s believed to be the first and largest student-run endowment fund in Canada has just passed the $10-million mark.
Engineering students John Vellinga and Avi Belinsky launched the Waterloo Engineering Endowment Fund or WEEF in 1990.
The fund goes towards student projects and to support student teams above and beyond what was provided by the university.
The purchase of equipment for the university’s Midnight Sun Solar Race Car Team, computers and monitors for undergraduate labs and 3D printers for the Waterloo School of Architecture in Cambridge are just some of the areas to benefit from the fund.
WEEF director Laurin Benson says “Reaching the $10 million mark in just 21 years is a huge accomplishment and a real tribute to engineering’s undergraduate students. The fund has provided students with a sense of ownership and pride in Waterloo Engineering.”
The accomplishment will be recognized during a celebration today in the foyer of the Carl Pollock Hall building at the University of Waterloo.
It runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
