Region’s Active Transportation Advisory Committee talks roundabouts

The Region’s Active Transportation Advisory Committee got an update on roundabout safety at its meeting yesterday.
The Region’s Manager of Transportation Engineering, Bob Henderson told the committee that, with the exception of 2010, collisions in roundabouts have been steadily decreasing.
He added that he wants to see the number of pedestrian collisions decrease at all types of intersections. “To me, a hundred pedestrians being hit on regional roads a year is not acceptable,” he explained. “Roundabouts have the potential to reduce that number…Statistically and scientifically they’re proven to do so.”
Henderson also pointed to examples of how roundabouts reduce pedestrian collisions. He said drivers and pedestrians are more likely to make eye contact and that drivers have more time to react because of the slower speeds.
The Active Transportation Advisory Committee provides input to the region in Walk Cycle Waterloo Region, the region’s Active Transportation Master Plan.
