Take back the night

Hundreds of local women take to the streets of K-W this evening for the 28th annual Take Back the Night march and rally.
It begins with a rally at 5:30 at the Waterloo Public Square, followed by a march along King Street, through Victoria Park and ending at Kitchener City Hall, where there will be workshops running until 10 p.m.
Sara Casselman, from the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, tells 570 News, men are invited to attend the rally and workshops as well as line the march route along King Street, but they are asked not to march.
Casselman says the march is symbolic, in that women should be able to feel safe walking our streets without a man to protect them.
Local statistics are sobering.
Every day, 14 women experience some form of sexual assault in Waterloo Region.
The Take Back the Night movement traces its beginnings to 1970s England, when a series of sexual assaults on women prompted authorities there to place restrictions on women and children, including curfews.
