Kitchener-Conestoga MP Harold Albrecht’s spoke in front of the House of Commons today on Bill C-300, an Act Respecting a Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention.
Canada is one of the only industrialized countries in the world to lack national coordination in suicide prevention efforts.
Albrecht said in order to reduce suicide the topic should be freely discussed without fear or shame.
“All levels of government need to do our part to face this issue head on…to do all we can to relieve the mental, emotional, and spiritual pain of those who are in despair and struggling with suicidal thoughts,” Albrecht said.
He adds it is a mental health issue but also a public health issue.
A second hour of debate will later be scheduled, after which the House will vote on whether C300 should be rejected or proceed to Committee for Study.
