Decision day for controversial roundabout

Regional council will finally vote tonight on some recommended changes to the Homer Watson and Block Line roundabout.
There are 4 changes being recommended, one of which is a change in the signage from “Yield to pedestrians”, to “Stop for pedestrians.”
If approved as is, the speed limit would also be reduced along Homer Watson between Bleams Road and Ottawa Street from 70km/h to 50 km/h.
Regional Councillor and Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr hopes these changes will work, “I think what we’re doing right now is an attempt to stabilize the situation in the short term…it obviously gives people an additional time to get accustomed to it.”
Zehr adds that if the changes are implemented, they need to be strictly enforced, “that kind of message will ripple through the community and I think people will be much more alert and will take their time when going through the roundabout. Unfortunately, there are some people who don’t care as much. Those are the people we need to make sure there’s enforcement there for.”
Council is also being asked to hold off on overhead signs until a review is done on the location of the pedestrian crossings.
