When the old Schneider plant closes in Kitchener it will also close a chapter on local history dating back to late 1800s.
It was founded by John Metz Schneider, better known to later generations as J.M Schneider.
His father, Johann moved to North America as a young man in the mid 1800s, first arriving in New York, like many immigrants did at the time, eventually making his way to Berlin, now known as Kitchener.
John was one of 9 children born to Johann and Anna.
Young John actually did not start out in the sausage business, but rather, he worked at a local button factory.
Fate would have it that he would suffer an injury on the job and it was then that he used an old German sausage recipe to launch the beginnings of what eventually became a massive and prosperous operation.
He did return to his factory job when he recovered from his injury, but he continued the sausage making business on the side.
The first signs of the current operations on Courtland sprouted up in 1911 slowly growing to what we know today.
