The focus of a two day conference that begins today is ‘Changing the Course of Autism’.
Autism Canada holds a conference every year and this years event is taking place at Bingemans.
Barb Hill is the lead for the Centre of Excellence at KidsAbility in Waterloo says the rate of those diagnosed with autism in our region is fairly high, “So 1 in 110 children are being diagnosed now and so I think that as the community learns more and we can support families with more information we all help support, you know, the family journey, because it can be a difficult one.”
A number of presenters will speak, touching on all different aspects, such as educating the public about autism and Hill adds, “they may not necessarily be based on medical evidence at this stage but they are alternative strategies which is something that parents are really anxious to know about. So I think for me I’m interested in a very different perspective.”
The price to attend the two day conference is $120, but Hill adds they don’t want cost to be a barrier for families who may not be able to afford it.
She advises those families to call Laurie Mawlam, the Executive Director for Autism Canada at 519-695-5858.
