The region really pays for parking

Kitchener-Waterloo is one of the most expensive places to park in Canada.
But it’s below the national average and well below what it’ll cost you in Calgary.
The average monthly rate in a parking garage in Kitchener is about 135 dollars. In Calgary, it’ll cost you about 470 dollars a month.
Director of Transportation Planning for the city, John McBride tells 570 News the monthly rate in Kitchener is about a third or less than the other cities surveyed.
“When you take a look a look at the Colliers survey, Kitchener is the lowest of all the major municipalities that have a significant parking operation.”
McBride added Kitchener works on a cost recovery system.
“The people who use the parking will have to pay for those operating costs. And what we’re doing is giving people a lot of choices, it could include transit, it could include car pooling.”
“There’s a number of different alternatives that are being developed.”
McBride stated that they have added more parking downtown, with the new Charles Benton parking structure now open.
And soon there will be even more with the parking garage at the main library currently under construction.
