The latest local crime statistics are out. Compared with 2009, the total number of offences was lower in the 2010 Waterloo Regional Police Criminal Offence Summary but there has been an increase in violent crime.
Crimes like assault and robbery helped lead the category to an 8.4% increase.
Chief Matt Torigian tells 570 News, we are seeing this kind of a jump in the numbers, “in part…because we’re a growing community, they have more incidents in larger communities than they do smaller communities because there are more people. That’s just a fact of life.”
Torigian adds it’s important not to read too much into these numbers, saying a long-term statistical analysis is required in order to start drawing conclusions as to exactly where these numbers are coming from.
Some other changes over the 2009 report include an 11% drop in thefts, drug offences going up almost 11% and traffic offences going up under 4%.
Torigian says that more targeted enforcement of drug and traffic related crimes are to thank for the increase in offences in their respective categories.
