Truck fire causes big problems on the Westbound 401

A garbage truck fire caused major backups for much of the day on the Westbound 401 around Cedar Creek.

The fire broke out around 8 a.m., blocking the two right lanes near the Nith River Bridge. All lanes reopened at about 4:45 p.m.

OPP Constable Michelle Murphy says it took that long to clear the problem because, “the truck had 47 tons of compressed garbage (inside). We had to get that removed to be able to get in there and put the fire out.”

At one point, callers to the 570 Newsroom said it was taking more than 90 minutes to get through the backup.
