No more free parking for downtown Regional employees

The days of free parking in downtown lots appear to be numbered for Regional employees.

Council has voted to eliminate that perk at a potential savings of anywhere from $700,000 to $1,000,000 a year.

Earlier, council considered eliminating the practice only for new employees, but the latest decision would be across the board, affecting over 1,000 staffers.

This morning’s Record reports, while free parking is not part of any union contracts, Regional Chair Ken Seiling warns it could spark a labour relations challenge, which happened when Kitchener stopped paying parking fees for city employees.

It’s still not known how much Regional employees will pay, nor is it clear which lots will be paid lots.
