Delayed Ward 5 projects

A number of community projects could still be another ten years in the offing for Kitchener’s South end.
Among the projects being delayed: a library, swimming pool, playing fields, arena and community centre.
Ward 5 councillor Kelly Galloway tells 570’s Jeff Allan it’s been very frustrating. The projects went from starting at the earliest in 2014 with completion in 2015, to starting as far off as in 2019/2020.
Galloway says the reason they are so far behind, is that the city must collect development fees. Those are the charges the city collects after a developer takes out the building permits for new housing. That is the cash that is used to construct new facilities.
She says the south end of Kitchener is one of the fastest growing areas in the region. Between 2005 and 2020, more than 38,000 new residents are expected to move to Kitchener with 60 per cent heading to the south end.
Galloway says it’s the residents that lose; it’s difficult for those that live in the south end to have facilities that have been earmarked for many years pushed back even more.
