Cyclist Registration

There are increased calls for cyclists in Ontario to be licensed or at the very least registered.

Ontario Safety League President and CEO Brian Patterson says he has heard from some municipalities inquiring about registering cyclists, but not necessarily licensing them.

He tells 570 News some have even floated the idea of setting up a program where cyclists would be required to take, what he calls, a “cycling threshold knowledge test.”

He says collisions between cyclists and pedestrians should not happen, since bikes should not be on sidewalks, unless they are being used by kids.

He says registering bikes makes sense from several standpoints, including it would make it easier to track down the owner if it’s stolen.

Still, he believes it would end up being a municipal choice, saying it doesn’t see the day coming when they are licensed by the Ministry of Transportation.
