Details emerge in fraud case

New details are coming to light about the case of a Cambridge teacher accused of faking cancer and accepting donations for treatment.

31-year-old Breanne McGuire was charged last year, but news of the case just became public this week.

This morning’s Record quotes Regional Police Inspector Greg Lamport as saying, “They didn’t want to do the media release for fear of her well-being.”

Waterloo Region District School Board Director of Education Linda Fabi told the paper, “I suspect it’s very difficult for her and her family, and it’s very difficult for her education family at the school.”

As for her professional status, McGuire last taught at Hespeler Public School.  For now, Fabi said she won’t be back in the classroom while the case is still working its way through the legal system.

The charges stem from alleged incidents between September 2007 and November 2009, including a fundraiser for her held at the Velvet Lounge in Cambridge.

She’ll appear in court on August 24th.
