A local man’s bid to ride with Lance next month will get another boost tonight.
Cancer survivor Marcel Portelance is trying to raise $50,000 to take part in the race through Waterloo Region on August 27th.
Tonight, Portelance’s supporters have organized “Sip for Hope,” a fundraising event at the Victoria Park Pavillion.
“The more the merrier, obviously,” says event organizer Trish Crompton. “Tickets can be purchased online or bought at the door. And we’re also asking people to bring a donation to the Food Bank with them to the event.”
Portelance was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and, following surgery, spent the next eight months undergoing a series of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He has attended the Ride for Lance in Waterloo Region every year but this time he plans to take part as a rider.
“He wants to give back to the Grand River Cancer Centre by riding the 120 kilometres and raising the funds to be able to do that,” Crompton explains. “All proceeds go to our local cancer centre. And with the request for food donations, we’re trying to benefit two causes at the same time.”
