Information Picket

This hot and humid day isn’t stopping picketers from getting their message across.
An information picket is happening outside of the Victoria Place Retirement Home on Queen street.
It’s to protest the impending layoffs of 70 full and part-time workers and casual workers.
About 75 per cent of the staff will be reduced to ‘casual’ status, even those with seniority.
Ruth Pryce, Vice President of CAW Local 1106, says her concern is with what kind of care the residents will receive, because they will suffer if there are less workers to help take care of them.
Pryce says they had reached a collective agreement that would protect the staff members (especially those with seniority) but says the opposite has happened, that the company is cutting hours and changing shifts on those who have been there the longest.
Job security is the Union’s main issue, followed by wages, benefits and better working conditions.
The two sides are set to begin negotiations next month.
A number of people turned out to show their support, by wavy flags and holding signs.
