An early look at the collision report

The 2010 annual collision report is coming out in a little over 5 weeks from now. The list shapes the way traffic is controlled in the region.
Bob Henderson is the Manager of Transportation Engineering with the Region and says, “We typically look at our top ten worst locations and we’ll look at those for possible counter-measure treatments”.
Some of those treatments are roundabouts and red light cameras. In more rural areas, rumble strips and beacons at stop signs are used. Henderson said that when used sparingly beacons are effective, “you don’t want to over-use them, because then you can water down the effect that they actually have. So you have to use them effectively and where it’s more appropriate to use them.”
Some intersections that have made the list in previous years may still be placing high. Henderson says, “we’re seeing some of the frequent flyers on our list including Homer Watson and Ottawa, which should be no surprise…we’re addressing that intersection with a roundabout”, adding that roundabouts can be effective for traffic calming, “where appropriate. Roundabouts aren’t meant to go in everywhere. Where we see collision problems that can be addressed by roundabouts, we’ll certainly consider them”.
While the region now has 16 red light cameras in place, Henderson said there isn’t yet a call for more, “currently at this time, there are no locations that would really benefit from a red light camera”.
The 2010 annual collision report is expected to be released on August 16th at a Planning and Works Committee meeting.
