What is cloud computing?

It’s all the rage in the tech sector right now, with more and more businesses and consumers turning to cloud computing, but what does this buzz word really mean?
There’s a pretty simple explanation. Cloud computing gives you access to things like documents, media and even software over the internet without having it stored on your device. The data can be called up on demand from anywhere.
Jennifer McCredie is Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing for Open Text and says cloud computing is not new but it has become a huge trend among businesses today because it, “benefits the enterprise by reducing overhead like running costs and total costs of ownership…organizations around the world are looking for all sorts of ways to drive efficiencies.”
McCredie says the shift from desktop computers to smartphones, tablets and netbooks is helping to drive companies and consumers toward cloud computing. She says, “It really is going to be morphing into the ability to access anything, in any device, at any time…and that’s really where we’re going and we’re moving away from the desktop paradigm.”
Cloud computing is becoming more common in the consumer market with services like Apple’s iCloud.
