Two Cambridge city councillors continue their push for a new sports and entertainment complex, despite a study warning it could be a big money loser.
That study, by IBI Group, suggests a facility along the lines of The Aud in Kitchener, could drain the city of between $750,000 and $2 million a year. City council looked at the report last night and accepted it as information.
This morning’s Record reports councillors Karl Kiefer and Nicholas Ermeta still back the initiative to construct a 6,000 seat complex which they say would be more than just a hockey rink.
They maintain it would bring money into the city by hosting such events as conventions, trade shows and tournaments.
The study is based on building such a facility at a cost of roughly $56 million.
The study instead suggests the best route to go for taxpayers is a 750-seat multi-purpose facility at a cost of just over $24-million that could be used as a rink and for smaller events and shows.
The city is in the midst of working toward finding a replacement for the Duncan McIntosh Centre single-rink in Churchill Park.
