St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener is stepping up its fight against colon cancer.
It’s one of just nine hospitals across the province to offer a screening procedure for the disease.
It’s a pilot program and utilizes nurses instead of doctors to conduct the tests.
It’s called Flexible Sigmoidoscopy and only takes 20 minutes to carry out.
It requires minimal preparation and no sedation.
It screens an area where 60% of colon cancers occur.
The hospital is making a concerted effort to promote the procedure as an effective way to screen for colon cancer.
The procedure is aimed at people 50 years of age and older.
