Canada Post workers could be legislated back to work early next week.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says the government has given notice that it plans to introduce legislation and the earliest it will be able to do so is Tuesday, since Monday is an Opposition day.
Raitt was a guest on 570’s Jeff Allan Show where she said the presidents of Canada Post and The Canadian Union of Postal Workers met last night however, “We may have moved the ball a little bit further but not so much further that I’m supremely optimistic that we’re going to be seeing any kind of deal being signed in the next couple of days.”
Raitt says the two parties and a federal mediator will be working on a deal through the weekend.
She says she’s heard from the public on both sides of the issue including, “current members of CUPW who want us to stay out of it, or it’s senior citizens, or mainly small businesses really saying, ‘we need our postal service on a regular basis…'”
