LRT vote passes 9-2

It was a historic night for the region of Waterloo.
Regional Council finally voted on the Light Rail Transit issue, almost 9 years after it was first introduced.
Councillors voted in favour of the proposal 9-2, which was followed by a standing ovation and a round of applause.
Regional Chair Jim Wideman described his mood as ‘elated.’ He says he is pleased with the way council and the community came together over this issue.
He says the Region has always been a leader and must continue to be competitive.
Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran was not in a celebratory mood. Both she and Regional Councillor for Cambridge, Claudette Millar voted against the proposal.
However, she says she is a ‘team player’ and will work with Regional Council for the benefit of our community.
She adds she is proud that she stood up for the citizens who she represents.
The first phase of the route will see trains from Conestoga Mall to Fairview and rapid buses to the Ainslie Street terminal in Cambridge.
