Number 4 is in town

Dozens of hockey fans old and young alike patiently waited outside the 570 News studios this morning to get the chance to meet an idol.

Hockey Legend Bobby Orr is in town to promote his latest project — The Chevrolet Safe and Fun Hockey Festival in Waterloo. He’s joined by another Canadian Hockey Legend, Cassie Campbell-Pascall.

In studio this morning, Orr tells 570’s Jeff Allan the message is simple. He believes that every kid that wants to play hockey, should be able to do so in a safe and fun environment. Orr says the goal is to teach kids, parents and coaches the fundamentals of the game and values like respect and responsibility.

He says back when he was playing with the Bruins he took some hits but they didn’t monitor head injuries like they do today. He says one of the players he has worked with in the past is current Boston Bruin’s forward Nathan Horton, who suffered a hit from behind in Game Three of the Stanley Cup finals against Vancouver.

Because of the hit, Horton is suffering from a “severe concussion” that will keep him out of the rest of the series. Orr says the most important thing is Horton’s health, not getting back on the ice as soon as possible like they did in the old days.

The latest instalment of the Chevrolet Safe and Fun Hockey Festival is only open to female players between the ages of 5 and 8.
