Canada Post Workers could be going on strike at 11:59pm Thursday night. With many switching from regular mail to e-mail and other online services, is Canada Post still a viable institution?
Gerry Deveau, National Director of the Ontario Region CUPW tells 570’s Jeff Allan despite changing technology Canada Post is still here in a big way. He says with a global economy, people are finding new uses for Canada Post. For instance, items purchased online are often delivered by Canada Post. As well, Deveau says there are still many small businesses and rural communities that rely heavily on Canada Post to send and receive bills, cheques and flyers.
Deveau says Canada Post has pulled a profit 16 consecutive years. So, even in hard economic times when other businesses were suffering, Canada Post was still making a profit and supporting the economy.
As for the main reason why they are considering strike action, Deveau says they just want to make sure things are safe for workers. He says Canada Post is already one of the most dangerous places in Canada to work. Slips and falls, repetitive strain injuries and dog attacks are the top health and safety issues. According to Deveau Canada Post employs about 6 per cent of all employees in the public sector, but their injury rate makes up 20 per cent of all reported injuries in Canada.
