With warmer weather heading our way for the summer you may notice an increase in insects, especially ants, mosquitoes and black flies.
Bug expert, Mark Grisold of Marshall Pest Control tells 570’s Jeff Allan he is still getting lots of calls on bed bugs.
The usual way people realize they have a problem is by being bitten. From there, it’s just a matter of inspection to find where exactly they are.
He says bed bugs are normally found on the base of the carpet or at the base of a mattress near the head board. They were eradicated in this part of the world in the 1930’s and 40’s, but with the way things are moving around so easily nowadays they just got shipped right back to us; the population expanded, and now it’s out of control. You can get rid of them thru a series of steps that include sanitation, chemicals, steam or heat.
Grisold says he’s also getting a number of inquiries about ants. There are several different kinds of ants in this area. Pavement ants that burrow in sidewalks to create those pyramids of dirt that you see; Carpenter ants have a golden hair on their backs; and Citronella ants which are orangey-yellow in colour and if you squish them, they smell like citrus.
Grisold says if you want to get rid of ants you need to eliminate any and all food sources.
