“ERASE”ing street racing

Waterloo Regional Police, along with police forces across the province are paying extra attention to unsafely modified vehicles and street racing.
The E.R.A.S.E. program, or “Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets Everywhere,” kicks off today. It was designed to reduce injuries and deaths caused by street racing or other high-risk driving behaviours.
Regional Police have been involved in the program since about 2003. Staff Sgt. Scott Diefenbaker is head of the Traffic Branch. He says street racing is not the problem it once was so the focus has shifted somewhat, to look more at vehicles with unsafe modifications.
Diefenbaker says, “We are not against people modifying their cars. We’ve been doing it for 50 or 60 years. It’s when those modifications are made to a vehicle that now makes the vehicle unsafe to control.”
He says some signs a vehicle may have unsafe modifications include a loud muffler and a lowered suspension. He adds that those alone don’t necessarily make a car unsafe but they are indicators and he would encourage the public to call police if they believe the car may be unsafe.
