Local jobless rate below the national average

Once again, the local jobless rate is substantially below the national average.

Vincent Ferrao of StatsCan tells 570 News, there were 41-hundred more people working in Waterloo Region last month.  However, despite the increase in actual jobs, the unemployment rate was up slightly in April to 6.9 per cent from 6.7 in March, because more people were looking for work.

Ferrao says there are about 21-thousand more people working in the Region now, compared to a year ago, led by increases in jobs in the construction, manufacturing and service sectors.

The national jobless rate stands at 7.6 per cent for April, down from 7.7 in March.
