Flood Free Spring

The Region of Waterloo came through the spring thaw season high and dry.
After all the melting snow and late-winter rain we had this year, Grand River Conservation Authority spokesperson, Cam Linwood, tells 570 News there was almost no flooding at all anywhere within Waterloo Region.
He says the worst we had was a couple occurrences of water spilling over into the New Hamburg fairgrounds beside the Nith River, but the water never got high enough to even reach the closest street.
New Hamburg usually has several occurrences of flooding during each Spring thaw, with several streets getting a deluge of river water.
Linwood says the absence of flooding can be attributed to colder nights helping moderate the melting water flowing into the rivers.
He says we also caught a break with a few major winter storm systems steering clear of Waterloo Region at the last minute.
But Linwood adds, outside of Waterloo Region, there were significant flood problems.
He says ice jams on the Grand River caused flooding in the Cayuga and Brantford areas.
