AURORA, Ont. – Provincial police say that even though seatbelts have been mandatory in Ontario for 35 years, some people still don’t buckle up.
During its annual seatbelt campaign from April 13th-23rd officers checked more than 1 million vehicles.
Police were paying special attention to how children were restrained, making sure that child safety or booster seats were properly installed.
Preliminary results show that a total of 5,622 charges were laid against drivers and a further 1,791 charges against passengers who were not wearing their seatbelts.
A total of 140 charges were laid against drivers for not having a properly installed or secured child restraint.
Police say lack of restraint has resulted in almost 900 motor vehicle collision injuries so far this year.
