NDP not slowing down

Recent polls that point to a surging New Democratic Party are not changing the approach in individual ridings.
“The only poll that counts is the one that’s taken on May 2nd,” notes Kitchener-Waterloo NDP candidate Bill Brown. “We continue to work hard and are continuing to get our message out and to let voters know the type of change that Jack Layton and I can bring to Kitchener-Waterloo.”
Brown, who was the latest participant in one of our online chat sessions, believes that the NDP surge is indicative that Layton’s message is getting through. But he’s equally insistent that his is an important voice in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Brown points to the legendary Max Saltsman, who once held the Kitchener-Waterloo riding for the NDP and sometimes won elections by securing more than 40% of the vote. He believes he can bring that same commitment to the community.
The best way to accomplish that, according to Brown, is to take a close look at corporate taxes. He doesn’t believe corporations are re-investing the money they’ve saved through recent cuts in their business taxes. By recovering that revenue, Brown says important things can be done.
“Services such as healthcare, which is something we expect,” Brown says. “And also to create initiatives like a national childcare program so that we can afford to go out and work instead of paying (the equivalent of) another mortgage payment in order to have our children looked after.”
Brown’s online chat covered a broad spectrum of topics, from the Stanley Cup playoffs to the CAW’s endorsement of the Liberal party. A transcript of the entire chat can be read here.
