Regional Police end 2010 with a surplus

The Waterloo Regional Police Service brought in a million dollars more revenue than they expected last year.

The year-end financial numbers for 2010 show the police service gathered in $1,066,791 in revenue beyond what was forecast in that year’s budget.

That’s 17% more revenue than expected.

A little more than a half-million dollars of that surprise revenue came from government grants, but the other half came from things like police reports and police services for  events.

Specifically, the fees for reports from the Traffic Reporting Centre were almost $190,000 more than expected.

And the fees for selling police reports were $150,000 more than expected.

An extra $110,000 came in from fees for policing events.

Altogether, the Police Service finished the year with a net surplus of $730,000, after deducting a deficit in operation costs.

The bulk of the surplus was put to Police Equipment Reserves, leaving a little bit of money to turn over to the Region of Waterloo.

Costs for the Police Service for the 2010 budget year came in at roughly $120-million, less than one percent higher than expected.
