NDP candidate for hire

Lorne Bruce wanted to get a message across.

So during an online chat with 570 News, the NDP candidate for Kitchener-Conestoga repeatedly used the word “hire” as opposed to “elect.” He wanted to drive home the point that voters would be hiring him to do a job for them, not merely electing him to office.

“I’m dealing with people’s issues,” Bruce stated flatly. “If a union represents their people and presents issues that are important to them, then of course I’m going to listen. It’s all about the people.”

Bruce has a history in labour, sitting as the Executive Board Vice-President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1977, on the Board of Directors at the Waterloo Regional Labour Program, and as an Executive Board Member of the Waterloo Regional Labour Council.

He pays little attention to recent polls that show great gains for the federal NDP, saying that he prefers to spend his time talking to people while going door to door. The response there, according to Bruce, has been very positive. And he finds that he’s meeting two different kinds of people.

“One time, somebody will open the door and start talking about ethics and how they’re completely frustrated with how Ottawa is working or not working,” Bruce explains. “And then there’s another vein (of people) who are talking about the daily issues like job creation, healthcare and pensions.”

Despite those efforts in going door to door, Bruce thought this time spent at our computer terminal was definitely worthwhile.

“I thought it was outstanding,” Bruce said of his experience in our online chat. “I thought it was a great way to reach people I might not get to on a daily basis.”
