Kitchener-Waterloo Conservative candidate Peter Braid may have faced the toughest questions to date of any participant in our 570 News online chats.
“As the incumbent and as a member of the governing party, it’s understood that you’ll get some tough questions,” Braid said in an interview following the online chat. “It comes with the territory and I’m pleased to answer them.”
Not even the answers were satisfactory for some participants, who challenged Braid on his response to the question of why he didn’t take a stronger stand to protect Waterloo-based Research in Motion during the sale of Nortel.
Braid responded online that “this was not reviewable under the Investment Canada Act because of the value of the transaction. At the time, I ensured that I was involved in the Committee hearing so that RIM was provided with the full opportunity to tell their story. What’s more, the critically important Nortel patents of interest to hi-tech companies are currently being auctioned and are available for sale right now.”
The answer did not satisfy Javier, a participant in the online chat, who insisted that the sale was in fact reviewable.
Braid said he appreciated the opportunity to reach out to voters via the online forum and, before leaving our studios, he repeated a now-familiar message from this campaign.
“We do feel that, in this election, Canadians have an important, stark choice to make,” Braid said. “And that choice is between a strong, stable Conservative majority government or the threat of an Opposition coalition.”
