Harper comes out on top in Tuesday’s debate: poll

TORONTO, Ont. – Did the performance of any of the party leaders during Tuesday’s debate improve their popularity?

According to an Ipsos Reid poll conducted right after the debate, 42 per cent of viewers felt Conservative Leader Steven Harper came out on top.

Twenty-five per cent of responda felt NDP Leader Jack Layton did well, just beating out Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff by a couple of percentage points. Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe was registered at two per cent.

Ignatieff appeared to be closest to that elusive moment during the exchange with Harper over the auditor general report, challenging him only once to release it  asking what he was afraid of. But, he didn’t push the point, and didn’t close.

However, the big winner appeared to be Layton. Fifty-five per cent of people had “improved impressions” of the NDP leader.

The poll was conducted in the half-hour immediately following the debate.
