A call for change

The first in our series of online chats with candidates for the federal election is in the books.
Liberal candidate for Kitchener-Conestoga, Bob Rosehart, spent an hour in our newsroom Tuesday and fielded more than two dozen questions, answering everything from why he’s running in the riding of Kitchener-Conestoga when he doesn’t live there to how he feels about the often negative campaign to date.
“I was impressed with the questions and obviously some of the participants had done a little research on me,” Rosehart said of the online chat experience. “I thought it was an interesting experience.”
Rosehart believes jobs, the economy and healthcare are national issues that resonate in the local riding of Kitchener-Conestoga. But he’s also got a personal beef with current long gun control legislation.
“I think it costs too much, it’s cumbersome and I think it needs to be dramatically changed,” Rosehart notes. “I would argue, within government, for a dramatic change and I would suspect that by the time you saw all the changes it wouldn’t even look like the current legislation.”
During the chat, Rosehart expressed frustration with the negative tone the campaign had already taken on and, afterwards, he emphatically downplayed any talk of a Liberal coalition.
“When you look at the platforms of the parties, it’s hard to tell some days if they’re left, centre or right. They all sample from each others ideology to some extent,” Rosehart states. “It really comes down to trust. And I think in this election, moreso than any recent election, Canadians have a clear choice between the Liberals and the Conservatives.”
