United Way Kitchener Waterloo has come up short in its first year of a three-year fundraising campaign, but the agency is staying optimistic.
Chair of the Board, Victor Zamin tells 570 News their tally over the past year of fundraising was $5.2-million, and they were aiming for $6-million.
But he adds, some revenue will continue to come in from the workplace campaign and other donations before the final audit and official total is presented at the annual general meeting in May.
Zamin says $5.2-million is “clearly not enough for the needs that we have in the community.”
Zamin says the agency though is still progressing well on the three-year goal of raising $21-million, and they just need to “dig in for the balance of the year” to get the community giving.
2011 Campaign Chair, Lisa Drew, from the 570 News morning show, calls $5.2-million a real success, adding while there’s still a ways to go, she knows we can do it in this community.
Drew adds her thanks to everyone who helped out the United Way this past year.
CEO Jan Varner says until she sees the final number from the audit, she’ll always have that “yikes!” feeling.
Varner says as the second year of the three-year campaign gets underway, the agency is looking at generating more year-round awareness of the United Way KW.
Also, aligning with certain organizations that have an interests in particular neighbourhoods, or have philanthropy strategies.
