Jays lock up Bautista

The Blue Jays have signed slugger Jose Bautista to a US$64-million, five-year contract extension.

It locks up the 54 home run hitter through the 2015 season.

The 30-year-old Bautista would have been eligible for free agency after this season.

The contract is by far the largest handed out by general manager Alex Anthopoulos in his year and a half on the job.

Bautista says he truly believes in the team and their ability to compete for championships in the near future.
