More concerns about student treatment

The Waterloo Region District School Board is telling its side of the story after a special needs student was left behind after a class skating trip.

Superintendent of Education Greg Bereznic spoke on 570’s Jeff Allan Show this morning. He says the teacher did not have an educational assistant with her on the trip and when the student refused to leave, she left him with an elderly couple while she brought the others back to school.

Bereznic admits that protocol was not followed in this case, saying “What happened was not in accordance with school or board policy and obviously the incident should not have happened, We obviously take the matter very seriously.”

A second parent has now come forward with concerns about the treatment of her special needs child at Queen Elizabeth Public School.

Bereznic says there was a complaint made last school year and problem solving measures were put in place. He says the board is reaching out to the parent again.
