Local band makes big impression

You may not have heard of the band Kidstreet (yet) but you’ve almost certainly heard one of their songs.

Ford Canada has just picked a song by the Waterloo trio for its 2011 advertising campaign.

Drummer Karl Snyder admits the entire process was somewhat overwhelming.

“I guess Ford heard it and they tried it out. And for them it was a bit of a change. Apparently, it was a little risque to try a song like this for their commercials,” notes Karl who, along with brother Cliff and sister Edna, make up Kidstreet. “But obviously it worked out pretty well.”

It’s worked out rather well for Kidstreet, too. Karl likens the success to having a Top 40 song — when the band plays it at shows, people instantly recognize it. Appropriately enough, the song is called “Song.”

Karl claims to have recognized the song’s potential early on. Among a handful of songs written for a close friend, it’s hard to argue with his assessment.

“It had a certain sound to it. I had a good feeling about it,” Karl insists. “So far, it’s also been in a number of short, indie films that have garnered a lot of attention.”

Karl says licensing music for commercials is one of many revenue-generating options available to a band. But now that Kidstreet is cashing cheques from Ford Canada, not much changes.

“The only thing that changes is you get a bit of money, you invest it back into the band and you can actually afford to tour,” says Karl.
