Fire at Kitchener garage

A fire at a garage in Kitchener closed a portion of King Street near the Grand River Bridge for more than an hour this afternoon.

Police blocked King between River Road and Hofstetter as fire crews battled the blaze.

Platoon chief Tim Bernier says they saw heavy smoke coming from the five-bay garage when they arrived on scene.

Firefighters had to break into the building and there was some concern about the potential for hazardous materials, but they found only a few jerry cans of gas.

Bernier says it took about a half hour to put the blaze out.

Damage to the building was minimal and was contained to two units.

No one was inside doing mechanical work at the time.

Bernier says they believe the fire may have started in one of two trucks being stored in the building, one of them containing a block heater.
