Fire at student residence

“It could have been much worse,” Platoon Chief Chris Collins says, regarding a an early morning fire at a student residence on King Street in Waterloo.
Nobody was injured in the blaze at 316 King St. N. And although damages total an estimated $100,000, that number would have likely been much higher had it not been for the fact that the bedroom door where the fire started was kept closed.
“Keeping a door closed contains the fire to that room at least for that period of time,” Collins says. “And by keeping the door closed, it’s only smoke and heat damage outside of the door.”
The student who lives in the third floor room where the fire started was able to escape before firefighters arrived around 12:45 a.m. The residence has 10 floors, with 118 rooms.
Forty students evacuated the residence, and were able to wait in a GRT bus, Collins says.
The cause is still under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.
