Signal LEFT in roundabout

It was all about the roundabouts at the Region of Waterloo council gathering today.

The Planning and Works Committee meeting this morning featured the debut of the Region’s new education campaign on how to use roundabouts.

One of the four TV commercials was played for the council members — radio commercials are coming as well, but those will be decided by a contest for local students to create the best sounding ad on roundabout etiquette.

Council members expressed satisfaction with the commercial, but some were puzzled by the advice in the ad to turn on your left hand turn signal when entering a roundabout, leave it on, and then signal right only when exiting the roundabout.

Regional staff replied, the left turn signal is the international standard of how to use a roundabout, and they don’t want to go against that standard, even if the MTO hasn’t set their own standard yet.

After the presentation of the commercial, the Committee approved the plans for twin roundabouts along Ottawa Street in Kitchener, one at Alpine, and one at Homer Watson.

Senior Project Manager, Wayne Cheater, says the MTO has approved the re-routing of the Highway 7-8 eastbound on-ramp from Homer Watson southbound to a new on-ramp at Ottawa and Alpine, to help ease congestion at the existing on-ramp off Ottawa at Homer Watson.

That approval, he adds, is pending the Region’s design plans.

Cheater told the council members the ramp and the roundabouts will ease traffic lining up to get onto Highway 7/8 eastbound by over 50 per cent.
